An Interview With Kid Phang
How did you get into music?
My cousin who made EDM tracks introduced me to people like Daft Punk, Gorillaz, Kanye, and XXXTENTACION. He made me really want to produce music that went from EDM to now Rap.
At what age did you start making music?
It started at a young age, I was about 11 and was messing around with music apps and then I found out about DAWs such as FL Studio. I used to make electronic beats on my dad’s old laptop, ‘til I finally got myself a laptop.
Are there any artists that you look up to, if so who and why?
Denzel Curry, Kendrick, Tyler, and Ye are people who hugely inspired my sound. Tyler and Ye are my main influences though, they made my head into the DIY attitude. That’s why my tracks are all produced, mastered, etc by me, album covers too.
What are some of your goals for being an artist for you?
To reinforce the DIY aspect of what you love.
If you could work with any artist who would it be?
Definitely people like Denzel, Tyler, Reveal, etc.
Where would you want to do a show city-wise?
Los Angeles has more shows in the I.E. too.
What is something you want to express to all your fans?
DO IT YOURSELF, DON’T LET THESE PEOPLE F*** WITH YOU. DO WHAT YOU WANT, FORGET THE FAKE PEOPLE BY YOUR SIDE, AND BE YOU!
How do you come up with your music?
Years of messing around with my voice and pen.
What was it like growing up for you?
It was cool, but there were downsides though for sure. I didn’t really have a definite home during elementary, my mom and dad are divorced so that really messes me up sometimes but it’s how it is. I used to be seen as the ugly kid, pepperoni face so the “pretty boys” ain’t wanna fuck with me, fuck ‘em though, I’m pretty as a motherfucker!
How do you feel about the music game lately?
It is so many dope people in the underground, a lot better than what’s mainstream nowadays. However, many people poppin’ off TikTok kinda do the same sh*t now
