Hip-hop has always been a genre that has thrived on access and exposure. For DJ Premier, also known as Chris Martin, access to the Marley Marl In Control Rap Show on 107.5 WBLS in New York City was a pivotal moment in his career. Marley Marl was the on-air personality and Pete Rock was the DJ, and Premier would record cassette tapes of the show to study in his dorm room. “No one on campus had these tapes. No one in Rhode Island had these tapes,” he recalls. “I was enamored with what Pete Rock was doing.” It was through his mentor, Ace, that Premier got his start in the hip-hop scene. “I consider Ace to be more than a friend, he was a Hip-Hop mentor,” he says. “I knew in my gut I was Hip-Hop and I was determined to show the world.” Premier’s determination paid off, as he became an official DJ for Bad Boy Entertainment in 2004 after years of building his reputation on the national and global scene.Premier’s first encounter with Bad Boy Entertainment was in 1999 when he recorded 106th & Park with hosts Aj & Free. He was the DJ for hip-hop legend Special Ed as he performed his classic hit, “I Got It Made.” After filming that show and Rap City’s The Basement with Big Tigg early in 2000, Premier became nationally recognized and started receiving vinyl and CDs from every record label. It was four years after those shows that his relationship with Bad Boy Entertainment began. Working as a DJ for Bad Boy Entertainment gave Premier the opportunity to work on a global scale, as the label was much more than just a record label. “It was a global brand and that affiliation catapulted my career,” he says. The seven years he spent with Bad Boy Entertainment were a fantastic time in his life, and he credits the label for giving him the exposure he needed to become the successful hip-hop artist he is today.
