Postwar, Canada’s Next Big Thing

I recently had the pleasure of getting to know Canadian artist, Postwar. Check out our conversation below.

  • What first got you into music?
  • Honestly I started out as a huge music snob. I was that douchy kid who only listened to classic rock and made SURE to tell everyone about it. I always had an obsession with consuming artist discographies and learning whatever I could about their careers and that in and of itself was just as interesting to me as the music. Basically what I’m telling you is I didn’t make friends easily as a kid (laughs).
  • Who inspired you to make music?
  • I became obsessed with the early SoundCloud/Internet rap scene when it first started poppin’ up. Folks like Lil Ugly Mane, Spaceghostpurrp, Chief Keef and even early Carti. Artists who were gaining large and loyal followings off of doing things their OWN way with their OWN sound thanks to the tools they were given via the Internet and social media. It made me realize that true DIY rap could be good, and it could be successful, like you don’t need a label behind you to have a following.
  • How would you describe the music that you typically create?
  • It’s lame as fuck to say but I really am the most versatile artist I know. I’ve done Jazz Rap, Trap, Old School Boom Bap, Noise Rap, R&B, Emo Rap, shit I put out a whole album with psychedelic rock band Cowbo Morsche. Nothing is off the table for me, I get bored so damn easily.
  • What is your creative process like?
  • I’ve got a lotta great people I work with who thankfully are super easy to work with when writing or recording a track. I make it a point to never overthink anything. If it’s trash, we gonna fuck around and find out we don’t do anything half assed (laughs). I like doin’ whole verses in one long take if I can get away with it I like the way it sounds better than punching in. I worry the most about recycling flows or rhyme schemes, the worst thing an artist can be is repetitive.
  • Who would you most like to collaborate?
  • I’d love to make a track with BADBADNOTGOOD they fuckin’ slap. Have you heard their 3rd album? Shit slaps. I’d be honoured to do a track with Westside Gunn or anyone from Griselda for that matter they’re all legends. They make the kinda music I wanna make right now.
  • If you could go open a show for any artist who would it be?
  • I mean shit gimme Drake or Kanye (laughs) I’ll plug my insta a shit ton fam I don’t care!
  • What is one message you would give to your fans?
  • Don’t hate me cause I’m human. All us artists are fucked up in some way so we can’t always be on our A game. We get sad, we get stressed, we get burnt out, it doesn’t ever mean anything personal or that something is “wrong” ya feel?
  • What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?
  • Drugs (laughs). I got enough addictions CURRENTLY I gotta deal with so if music wasn’t here to keep me focused and passionate I’d be dead if not very close to it. I’m very lucky.
  • Where have you performed? Do you have any upcoming shows? and Where is your dream concert?
  • Last tour I did was in the summer of 2019 and that was fun as hell. I just hopped in my car and booked shows wherever I could within driving distance. It was lit cause I was doin’ it with my homie XVNNY who’s just a perfect human. Hometown shows are always the best though. I’m from Winnipeg, Manitoba and the Hip Hop scene here is insane. The fans here really make you feel like a king. I’m hoping to get a show in Toronto under my belt in 2022 at some point too that’s my main goal show wise right now.
  • What is your favourite song to perform?
  • I’m Not Okay live is great cause the fans always sing the hook for me, brings the vibe up AND if it’s later in the show and I’m tired as a mothefucker I don’t have to do any of the hard work (Laughs). Nah for real though it’s a great feeling that song seems to hold a special place in their heart.
  • What song are you most excited about on your upcoming tape?
  • I can’t say too much, all I can say is every song is produced by Al Wonder.
  • Describe your upcoming EP for us.
  • It’s an album actually! It’s raw, meaningful, beautiful, and above all, a spectacle. You will feel at the end of it like you’ve just watched a Scorsese film.
  • What’s next for you?
  • My single “Letterman Jacket” just dropped on the 15th, produced by Al Wonder of course. “Hands Of God” just hit 15K streams and this new one is even better, I’m real excited. Also got something wit the boy RX Nephew in the pipeline so stay tuned.

Keep up with Postwar here!
