Stoic’s Latest With Mick Jenkins Is Arguably His Best Yet

Stoic just released a new single featuring his advanced production and Mick Jenkins vocals. Immediately, the opening track forces you to pay attention, functioning not too differently than a shot of espresso. At first the vocals are calm, but then the tempo picks up which works to really drive each word home to the listener. In between the catchier verses, there’s some time to process the lyrics, worthy of as much appreciation as the production.

What really stands out about Super Sport is how the words and tempo are in a kind of conversation with each other. Sometimes they are doing their own things, sometimes they are in sync, but they are always working together to tell a story. From start to finish, the listening experience is much like riding a rollercoaster. The storytelling is very well done and you can tell because it makes room for feeling a spectrum of emotions. At the root of the rollercoaster is the bass, as soon as you notice it, you won’t be able to ignore it. It is steady throughout and holds all of the more unpredictable song elements together. With each new listen, Super Sport  comes alive with layered vocals making themselves more and more known. My personal favorite part of the track about a minute and 40 seconds in when it feels like I’m being thrown into slow motion, but you should listen for yourself to get what I mean.
