More Than Just A Soccer Player: Meet Cam Will, Milwaukee’s Golden Child

Back in 2018, Cam Will was a prominent player on the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee soccer team. Coming in as a highly touted freshman who’d broken three high school scoring records, Will dominated at UWM playing in 17 of the team’s 19 games. Despite his athletic success, Cam soon realized that soccer wasn’t a part of his future.

“After my freshman season at UWM, I decided that I just wasn’t feeling [soccer] like that. I ended up making a project and passing out flyers and that was the first time that I went to an actual studio to record. From there I really started messing with the feeling of making music and putting it out to people,” Cam explained in an interview.

Even though this was his first taste of creating his own music, the art form had always been in his life.

Growing up in Milwaukee, Cam knew practically everyone. Not only did his family own a barbershop in town but Cam attended five schools growing up which exposed him to all walks of life.

“It’s the most segregated city in America so you can go to the south side and there are a lot of Hispanics, you go to the north side there are a lot of Black people…I grew up playing soccer so I was with Hispanics on the Southside…and I joined other teams so I was around White people from the West,” Cam stated.

This diverse background also introduced Cam to several genres of music including rap, jazz, gospel, and r&b, among others. This diverse background plays a heavy role in the kind of music the 21-year-old makes today.

“My music is a product of my environment. You might be able to hear the reggae that I grew up listening to or the Hispanic music or hip-hop all of that within the songs I make now,” Cam remarked.

However, just because he no longer plays soccer at a Division I level doesn’t mean that he doesn’t apply the values he learned from soccer into his new career.

“I hate being bad at anything that’s how competitive I am. Sometimes when me and my homies go hoop sometimes I gotta tell them I can’t go because if I lose, I might be in the gym for the next week so then I won’t work on music,” Will said.

This is particularly evident on his new project “Separation Summer”. The 7-track body of work offers summery vibes with lyrics and flows that flex Cam’s meticulous pen game and attention to detail. Tracks like “Blood Bond” with fellow Milwaukee native Tre$o and the Bizness Boi produced cut “All Day” paint vivid pictures of an everlasting love affair.

Cam’s ear for flipping classic lines and songs is also on full display with his interpolation of 50 Cent’s “Wanksta” on “Ion Care” as well as sampling Jeremih’s interpolation of Shai’s “If I Ever Fall in Love” on the same track.

Since releasing this project, Cam Will has finally achieved the feeling of elevating past being merely a soccer player.

“I think now I’m finally being able to be looked at as more than just a soccer player by my peers. I felt like if I could make these people believe that I’m a musician and they’ve seen me play soccer and only soccer for 18 years then it’s going to be easy to get everyone else to believe,” he explained.
