An Interview With: HappyBirthdayCalvin

We recently had the opportunity to chat with Chicago rapper HappyBirthdayCalvin about his rise to fame, and the success he has had in his short but explosive career. Check our interview with him below!

Q: Going back 2 years ago what inspired you to make “No Friends”
Calvin: I was high as fuck and I was thinking about how I didn’t have any friends.

Q: Looking back at “No friends” how do you feel about it now?
Calvin: It’s an amazing song I think it’s great for this generation and I think the lyrics are timeless.

Q: Do you ever plan to work with G Herbo again?
Calvin: I just saw that nigga at the airport haha, I definitely plan on working with bro again.

Q: How’d it feel to team up with G Herbo for a remix?
Calvin: His verse was cold as fuck. I love how he started it off.
Super iconic.

Q: What message do you want your fans to have from your music?
Calvin: THAT ANYTHING YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE YOU CAN
THAT ITS OKAY TO BE DIFFERENT.

Q: What is one thing you look back on in your past and say you’re proud of yourself?
Calvin: I walked vogue and met a lot of artists, I love listening to (Brent Faiyaz, Lil Keed).

Q: What was the idea behind the song “BUT I LOVE HER”?
Calvin: The idea of the song was that even though the woman wasn’t perfect (promiscuous) she was
still capable of taking my soul.

Q: Do you ever get writer’s block when coming up with a new song?
Calvin: I don’t believe in writer’s block. I believe in running out of ideas and losing motivation.
But usually, I just stop working on a specific song and work on something else until I get ideas.

Q: If you have a rap hero who is it and why?

Calvin: The only person I would ever consider a rap hero of mine is probably Kanye WestBecause he’s now a multi-billionaire from the south side of Chicago and didn’t have to box himself into any specific category artistically.

Q: If you have learned anything about rap what is the most inspiring thing you have learned?
Calvin: The most inspiring thing I’ve learned about rap is how much the culture matters in music and
how the artist is always in control. Even when the label thinks they are in control they are only secondary to the power of the artist (especially when the artist has a die hard following).
