An Interview With Director FortyDiamonds

@fortydiamonds

I’ve known FortyDiamonds for years. We actually used to work at a pizza place together roughly 8 years ago, so this one is special for me! Witnessing Forty grow and become one of the top directors/videographers out of Canada has been nothing short of impressive, and it’s only the beginning for him. Check out our exclusive interview below!

Q: What’s good my boy! Tell the people about yourself.
Forty: Yoo I’m FortyDiamonds, I’m a director out of Winnipeg Manitoba.

Q: Talk to us about the music scene in Winnipeg.
Forty: The city? Hmm it’s tough to really speak the state of the city mentality, I feel like when it’s hot it’s hot and when it’s not there’s only a few artists who stay standing consistently. It’s tough to come out of Winnipeg because we’re so small, you drop a song and people who feel like they’ve known you your whole life already have an opinion on you.

Q: What made you decide to pursue a career in videography?
Forty: I think a lot of stuff just happens for me, filmmaking has always been in my life, I didn’t necessarily choose it as a career but over the last 3 years it’s helped me network and get closer to my real goals in life.

Q: You’re now self-employed completely through music. What was the hardest thing you dealt with while making the transition from a regular 9-5, to being your own boss?

Forty: It’s been 2 years now since I haven’t worked a regular job all I can say is how blessed life is when you can do whatever you want whenever you want. The transition itself isn’t hard, work both till the other can take over. The hard part is being motivated after working 8 hours, to go home and work on yourself..

Q: You’ve clearly proven yourself as an A&R, what are some traits you look for when scouting new artists to work with?
Forty: Be yourself and be self aware. Know if there’s a place for your sound and if there isn’t. Be unique and don’t copy other people, why would they listen to you over the person you’re copying ?

Q: What is the craziest thing that has ever happened on set of a music video?
Forty: Man to much y’all gotta peep my YouTube for the details on each vid? I will say one video we got arrested and detained for 3 or 4 hours

Q: What has been the most rewarding thing you’ve experienced during your time as a director so far?
Forty: No rewarding experience yet this job sucks ?. Nah just playin, I honestly just love capturing moments and having them forever. Even just going back a year ago into my memories and seeing how far we’ve come or a conversation we manifested.
